PROJECT Studies: 7-7-1 Wonders of the World!, K-6th
Our Project Studies take up a total of 2 hours of the 4.5 hour Homeschool Enrichment block. The Projects will all be based around the theme of 7-7-1 Wonders of the World! What is 7-7-1? Glad you asked! 7 Wonders of the Ancient World, 7 New Wonders of the World, and 1 Wonder dreamed up and designed by your very own student! What will he or she leave as their mark on civilization? We’ll find out! They’ll get awesome hands-on PROJECT Studies instruction in Social Studies, Science, Math, and Language Arts through fun interactive hands-on lessons.
Students will build their own portfolio throughout the PROJECT. They’ll study geography, map reading, and ancient civilizations. Portfolios will be filled with maps, vocabulary, and awesome trivia!
Each week students will explore a new ‘Wonder’ and get some fantastic hands-on fun:
Week 1: How long would it take to walk around the Great Pyramid? Come learn all about it and find out!
Week 2: Students will build their own hanging garden modeled after Alexander the Great’s Hanging Gardens of Babylon.
Week 3: They’ll explore Greek architecture with a hands-on project
Week 4: Explore some fun photography tricks
And soooo much more! Every week will bring a new adventure!
Our PROJECT Studies will culminate with a celebration of your own student’s ‘Wonder of the World’, which he/she will develop throughout the course of the 14-week session.
Lunch & Social Time: The homeschooled kids love being together! During lunchtime we supervise closely to make sure that social interactions between kids are kind and fun. If an unkind conversation begins to take place, we quickly work with the students to learn a better way to handle things, and we help them with a ‘do-over’. One of our goals at BYL is to help homeschool families create a wonderful and local social group for their kids!
During the 4.5 hour Homeschool Enrichment Block, there will be two times when your student will get to choose their elective classes! Spots will be limited in each of the electives, and are first come-first served. Students remain in their elective classes for the full 7 week session.
Choices for first half of session: February 8th - March 29th (7 weeks)
First Hour: (Choose 1) Homeschool Choir OR Book Club with Survival Skills Focus
Second Hour: (Choose 1) Digital Film making OR Knitting
Choices for second half of session: April 12 - May 24th (7 weeks)
First Hour: (Choose 1) Homeschool Choir OR Mystery Science,
Second Hour: (Choose 1) Secret Agents, Spies and Code breaking OR Gardening
Homeschool Choir: Students will experience training in reading music, matching pitch, vocal exercises to strengthen their vocal muscles, harmonizing, musical terms and more! Students will perform at the end of each of the 7 week sessions. Homeschool Choir will be offered the full 14 weeks.
Book Club, Survival Skills Focus: Get ready for some fun! Students will be provided a booklist of fantastic survival stories (age appropriate, don’t worry!), and as a group we’ll choose 2 books to focus on. They’ll read the books at home, and then we’ll discuss how the characters used their knowledge and courage to survive. From pitching a tent to finding something to eat in the wild, it’s going to be a fantastic class! The survival simulation on the last few weeks will be something they never forget!
Digital Filmmaking: Students will spend time photographing and filming, and then learn how to make those into a movie! Those who have iPads/laptops should bring them to use. The more available, the more ‘hands-on’ this class will be.
Knitting & Leadership: Cast on, cast off! Kids love to make things, and knitting is a great way to keep active hands busy! Students will learn the beginnings of knitting, and how to follow a pattern to make their own simple creations. Intermediate knitters will be challenged with harder patterns. During the knitting sessions, students will also learn the history of knitting, why it was done, and what did people talk about while they sat around knitting, anyway? In our class, we’ll have some fantastic leadership discussions as we knit!
Mystery Science: What happens if? How does this work? Is it safe to mix these two liquids together? Questions, questions, questions! And in Mystery Science… some super cool answers! Students will oooooh and aaaaahhhh as they discover scientific answers through logical reasoning and experimentation. And, of course… lots of fun!
Gardening: Vegetables, fruits, succulents, and more! Students will have some hands-on gardening fun in this class. Not only will they plant different kinds of seeds, they’ll learn how to care for them as well. It’ll be a great way to start their very own Spring/Summer garden, and they’ll bring home a new ‘baby’ plant each week!
Secret Agents, Spies & Code breaking: Students will love exploring the secret world of codes and deciphers, fingerprinting and mysteries. They’ll meet some real spies throughout history and discuss whether they were ‘good guys’ or ‘bad guys’. They’ll practice logic-sleuthing, who-done-it mysteries, dusting for fingerprints and code breaking.
